I recently had the pleasure of speaking to some very successful women business owners.
As I worked closer with them about growing their businesses, and just thinking bigger about their businesses in general, I noticed there were some common threads they shared.
Here are some of the comments I heard (yes, these are actual quotes):
“I’m very happy right now, I am afraid that happiness will go away if I grow my business.”
“I don’t want to be a millionaire…. I just want to make enough money to be happy.”
“I have been standing in my own way for years now, because I am afraid of how big I can be if I let myself dream big.”
“I think success will make me change and I don’t want to change.”
(By the way….a man would NEVER say any of the above.)
I respect every business owner for wherever she wants to go with her business; however, if there is a Fear of Success holding us back, then we need to recognize that and move past.
What is Fear of Success exactly?
According to the information I pulled up on the internet, this is what I found:
IF YOU THINK SUCCESS MEANS YOU ARE SMARTER, CRAFTIER, WISER , SLICKER THAN OTHERS, THEN SUCCESS IS VERY FRIGHTENING.
IF YOU THINK SUCCESS MEANS YOU ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS, ENTITLED, ENDOWED, OR THAT IT GIVES YOU A RIGHT TO BE ARROGANT, THEN SUCCESS IS VERY SCARY.
When I read that I realized that I, like a lot of these women, was also fearful of success at one time in my life.
When I wrote my first book, HIRE ME! SECRETS OF JOB INTERVIEWING (go to www.jobinterviewingsecrets.com for the ebook),
I would not show it to anyone unless you came into my office and bought it for $5. I was terrified that someone in my business of staffing would make fun of me and tell me I should not have written it. Be careful what you think because, sure enough, in she came…. I call her Lucy because she was such a ‘know-it-all’.
She picked up my book and said “YOU wrote a book? You have got to be kidding!” I hung my head and watched her turn the pages, making fun of each chapter, as she went from front to back cover. She told me she had a book she was working on that was in her head like a computer, and that hers was going to be 500+ pages, not a meager 100 pages like mine.
I tried to explain I just wanted to help others get a job with what I knew… and then something amazing happened.
I looked at this woman holding MY book, and said “Do you know the difference between your goal and mine?” “No, what?” she replied.
“Your goal is still in your head, I WROTE mine down in the form of a book.”
BOY, THAT FELT GOOD!
That day I gave myself permission to be a successful author and business owner. Ironically, 2 weeks later I got a call from the largest publishing company on the west coast wanting to buy the rights to the book. It is now in several different languages and helps people all over the world get a job.
By the way, Lucy’s book never did get out of her head.
Moral of the story:
DO NOT LET ANYONE INTIMIDATE YOU! THEY CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR DREAMS, YOUR GOALS….REMEMBER, THEY CAN’T INTIMIDATE YOU UNLESS YOU ALLOW THEM TO.
So if you want to grow your business as big as you can,
If you want to think bigger about life and business,
If you want to get out of your way,
I give you permission to become the successful person you want to be TODAY!
Good Luck
