Are You Ready For Your Tipping Point?

When I first read Gladwell’s THE TIPPING POINT: How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference, I was mesmerized by the theory how one idea can make such a change.

The story about Hush Puppies, the classic American brushed suede shoes with the lightweight crepe sole, was enlightening. The brand had been dead until the “tipping point” happened to the shoe line between late 1994 and early 1995.Sales were down and the company was thinking of phasing out the shoes that once made them famous. But something strange happened. Two Hush Puppy executives were told that the shoes had become “hip” in clubs and bars in downtown Manhattan, all because a few famous people had starting wearing them. Advertising had nothing to do with the tipping point; it happened totally because of word of mouth. In ’95 the company sold 430,000 pairs of Hush Puppies, then the next year sold over a million, until the shoe became a staple once again. Hush Puppies had suddenly exploded, and it started with a handful of kids in New York’s East Village and Soho. The point of the story for us today is: “Are you ready for YOUR business to have tipping point?” I know I am. Our time has come. The information is here to help us do just that with our businesses and our services. We just have to help each other think BIGGER and share what is working. I am dedicated to doing just that, one e-zine at a time.Is there something you could do within your company that would take it to a certain point in popularity?  How could you create a “buzz” about your product or your service?Going back to the subtitle of the book, How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference, I have to say that our event for business owners is that “little thing” that will make a BIG difference in your business and in your life.Let’s create YOUR tipping point!Patricia  www.patriciadrain.com

Do You Text?

I was watching a very interesting piece on YouTube called DID YOU KNOW? Two facts were mentioned:·         THE FIRST COMMERCIAL TEXT MESSAGE WAS SENT IN DECEMBER 1992.·         THE NUMBER OF TEXT MESSAGES SENT AND RECEIVED DAILY EXCEEDS THE TOTAL POPULATION OF THE ENTIRE PLANET TODAY.Can you believe that???It would be interesting to know how many of you reading this article text on a regular basis. My friend Fran kept texting me when we were speaking in Texas last week and I could not even reply because I don’t text. I think it is funny when I see a group of kids sitting right next to each other and instead of talking they are texting each other. While I think that is odd behavior, they think of texting as normal, everyday way of communicating with each other. The controversy surrounding texting is that kids aren’t learning how to spell properly, and they are losing touch with the power of verbal communication.I have discovered that the reason all the programs and opportunities I am developing are so popular, is because we want to connect with each other. We want to form a community of like-minded people that want the same things in life, however we also want to talk to each other about our dreams and goals. My mentor business strategist program has doubled since last year, and it is no surprise to me. People want one-on-one sessions, where someone listens intently to their ideas, challenges, hopes and dreams. We then strategize about “their” business and lifestyle.
When was the last time you could talk to someone about your business and your lifestyle and they even cared enough to sit down and work with you?
One of the things I have discovered that makes me happy is either teaching or learning. When I do learn some new business strategy that works, I can’t wait to teach it to my community of owners and entrepreneurs. Anyone who has ever worked with me knows that I am there with intense listening skills, because I think it dishonors people not to be there for someone who is fully in the moment.Remember: with all the texting, emailing, faxing and voice mails, people still want to touch you and be touched. People still want to talk to you and be talked to.If you haven’t been touching your clients lately, pick up the phone, call them, write them a note, take them to lunch, drop by their office or ask them survey questions so that you can better serve them. Maybe even set up a follow up system like I have. Do something TODAY.I guarantee your competition is not communicating like you will be.Everyone is looking to be validated and appreciated. In fact, many employers are shocked to find out that the #1 reason employees leave is that they don’t feel appreciated. It was not about the money, as the employer thought it would be.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF SUCCESS?

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to some very successful women business owners.

As I worked closer with them about growing their businesses, and just thinking bigger about their businesses in general, I noticed there were some common threads they shared.

Here are some of the comments I heard (yes, these are actual quotes):

“I’m very happy right now, I am afraid that happiness will go away if I grow my business.”

“I don’t want to be a millionaire…. I just want to make enough money to be happy.”

“I have been standing in my own way for years now, because I am afraid of how big I can be if I let myself dream big.”

“I think success will make me change and I don’t want to change.”

(By the way….a man would NEVER say any of the above.)

I respect every business owner for wherever she wants to go with her business; however, if there is a Fear of Success holding us back, then we need to recognize that and move past.

What is Fear of Success exactly?

According to the information I pulled up on the internet, this is what I found:

IF YOU THINK SUCCESS MEANS YOU ARE SMARTER, CRAFTIER, WISER , SLICKER THAN OTHERS, THEN SUCCESS IS VERY FRIGHTENING.

IF YOU THINK SUCCESS MEANS YOU ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS, ENTITLED, ENDOWED, OR THAT IT GIVES YOU A RIGHT TO BE ARROGANT, THEN SUCCESS IS VERY SCARY.

When I read that I realized that I, like a lot of these women, was also fearful of success at one time in my life.

When I wrote my first book, HIRE ME! SECRETS OF JOB INTERVIEWING (go to www.jobinterviewingsecrets.com for the ebook),

I would not show it to anyone unless you came into my office and bought it for $5. I was terrified that someone in my business of staffing would make fun of me and tell me I should not have written it. Be careful what you think because, sure enough, in she came…. I call her Lucy because she was such a ‘know-it-all’.

She picked up my book and said “YOU wrote a book? You have got to be kidding!” I hung my head and watched her turn the pages, making fun of each chapter, as she went from front to back cover. She told me she had a book she was working on that was in her head like a computer, and that hers was going to be 500+ pages, not a meager 100 pages like mine.

I tried to explain I just wanted to help others get a job with what I knew… and then something amazing happened.

I looked at this woman holding MY book, and said “Do you know the difference between your goal and mine?” “No, what?” she replied.

“Your goal is still in your head, I WROTE mine down in the form of a book.”

BOY, THAT FELT GOOD!

That day I gave myself permission to be a successful author and business owner. Ironically, 2 weeks later I got a call from the largest publishing company on the west coast wanting to buy the rights to the book. It is now in several different languages and helps people all over the world get a job.

By the way, Lucy’s book never did get out of her head.

Moral of the story:

DO NOT LET ANYONE INTIMIDATE YOU! THEY CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR DREAMS, YOUR GOALS….REMEMBER, THEY CAN’T INTIMIDATE YOU UNLESS YOU ALLOW THEM TO.

So if you want to grow your business as big as you can,
If you want to think bigger about life and business,
If you want to get out of your way,

I give you permission to become the successful person you want to be TODAY!

Good Luck

Patricia
